A collection of things that stayed

Things we almost
threw away.

Not valuable. Not useful. Sometimes not even beautiful. And yet somehow, they stayed. This little archive is made from the ordinary objects people couldn't quite let go of.

Look closer. Every object here has a reason for surviving. Click one and read the story attached to it.

The little green toy

It stopped working years ago. It survived several moves, a broken arm and a childhood that eventually grew up.

“I know it's useless now. I just can't imagine putting it in the bin.”

About this collection

Why do we keep things?

We asked 25 people to name one ordinary thing they had almost thrown away, and asked why they kept it. The objects were grouped by the reason people gave: memories, people, places, identity and “just in case.” The numbers shown here are calculated from those 25 responses.
